MHPSS & PROTECTION GREECE

Protection and mental health care for vulnerable refugees in Greece

Since 2018 OlamAid, in close cooperation with the Central Welfare Board of Jews in Germany (ZWST), supports refugees in Greece in dealing with trauma and psychological stabilization, with a focus on particularly vulnerable groups.

In recent years, “”Navigation Greece”” has successfully trained committed former project participants with a refugee background to become intercultural mediators and community managers. This enables the project to have direct and context-sensitive access to the target group and to newly arrived refugees. Since the end of 2021, the project “Protection Greece” has been building on these successes.

The psychosocial support (PSS) takes the form of an art therapy program that supports the process of trauma management and stress reduction and contributes to the psychological stabilization of the participants. Moreover, a psychologist supports the stress relief and well-being of individuals, as well as community empowerment through PSS work. The target groups are reached directly in two community centers in Thessaloniki, as well as through a mobile “PSS tent” in Serres, near a refugee camp, in order to bring the help directly to the affected community.

Within the framework of the evacuation program for unaccompanied minors (UAMs) from the Greek islands to the mainland, this project has been offering targeted support for unaccompanied minor refugees since 2020. Support is given to local partners who offer courses for integration into the labor market and legal advice for UAMs. The project also provides training and resource building using PSS methods for service providers who work with unaccompanied minors.
