After the catastrophic forest fires that hit Greece in August 2021, OlamAid, in cooperation with the ZWST and the local aid organization ΚΕΑΝ, implemented the project “Wildfires in Greece – Emergency Response” in order to strengthen and support local voluntary aid and fire brigades. In the regions of Attica, Evia and Thessaloniki, they were trained to prevent and combat forest fires. This was achieved, for example, by providing firefighting and first aid training and by providing the necessary equipment for firefighting. In addition, training courses were conducted in the field of psychosocial support, which addressed how to deal with one’s own psychological stress and that of the affected communities. As part of the project, 125 volunteer firefighters were trained to carry out firefighting operations to protect a total of 360,000 inhabitants in the impacted regions.
The project was funded by Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH) and was carried out during the period September 1st, 2021 to December 31st, 2022.
